12 Stunning Plus Size Maxi Dresses for Every Occasion

Maxi dresses have always been a go-to for their effortless elegance, but for many plus  size women (cause I know it’s not just me lol) embracing fitted styles can feel intimidating.

I love a good mini dress, but for the longest time, I avoided fitted maxi dresses, thinking they highlighted the "wrong parts" of my body or made me look older than I was. I think there’s also a part of me that shied away from them because, as plus size women, we are often told to cover up. Wearing longer dresses made me feel like I was giving into that narrative.

But that’s a lie we’re leaving behind in 2024. Today I’m trying on 12 maxi dresses from Fashion Nova Curve and Ofuure. For sizing reference, I am 5’9”, 355lbs, and I am wearing a 3X in all styles.

This blog post is about using fashion to push against limiting beliefs. Each of the 12 styles taught me something about loving myself more and elevating my style. I can’t wait for you to experience the same feeling! Read on for more inspiration.

Let the Haul Begin

1.Kira Sweater Maxi Dress (Fashion Nova Curve)

Available in black and white or a bold purple and pink combo, this dress is all about making a statement. Its illusion print hugs curves beautifully, and the high slit adds drama. This dress made me realize bold patterns aren’t just wearable—they’re empowering.

Styling Tip: Pair with black strappy heels for a classic look or clear shoes for something more modern.

2. Claudia Knit Maxi Dress (Fashion Nova Curve)

This dress is fall-ready with its warm cognac tones and retro checkered pattern. Inspired by 1970s fashion, the high neckline and long sleeves make it cozy and stylish. The stretchy knit fabric provides structure while allowing easy movement. Clothes should make you feel as good as they look. This dress reminded me of the importance of investing in timeless pieces that spark joy every time you wear them.

Styling Tip: Add a camel trench coat, gold accessories and nude ankle boots for a polished fall look.

3. Study Girl Cardigan Maxi Dress (Fashion Nova Curve)

Is it a maxi or midi? Either way, this rib knit dress is endlessly versatile. Button it up for a sophisticated look or unbutton halfway to layer it over jeans for a casual outfit. The stretchy material makes it both comfortable and curve enhancing.

Styling Tip: Go daytime chic with white sneakers or elevate it for the evening with gold heels and a matching clutch.

4. Portofino Gloved Lace Maxi Dress (Fashion Nova Curve)

This dress exudes elegance and drama with its detachable gloves and intricate lace detailing. Whether you wear it lined for a more formal vibe or go bold by removing the lining, this dress is perfect for parties or special occasions. Both covered  up and sultry versions of yourself are valid and beautiful. Let this dress remind you to embrace all sides of your personality.

Styling Tip: Pair with bold silver jewelry and sleek heels for maximum impact.

5. Veronica High Neck Maxi Dress (Fashion Nova Curve)

Although this dress ran slightly small for me, its high neckline and elegant design still made me feel fabulous. The soft material and structured fit provide a chic and sophisticated look perfect for layering.

Styling Tip: Layer with a black satin button-down shirt or go monochrome with black accessories for a sleek and modern vibe.

6. Body Heat Sweater Maxi Dress (Fashion Nova Curve)

With its stretchy sweater fabric and bold black  and  white optical illusion print, this dress makes a striking statement. The high side slits balance out the modesty of the long sleeves, creating a look that’s equal parts comfy and chic.

Styling Tip: Dress it down with sneakers and a relaxed tote, or elevate it with silver accessories and a high ponytail for a sleek, futuristic look.

7. Aurora Sweater Maxi Dress (Fashion Nova Curve)

This midi-length dress channels retro vibes with its warm, wavy patterns and cozy sweater material. The earthy rust and cream tones feel like a warm hug for your wardrobe. Just like this wavy print, life has its ups and downs. Focus on what you can control and let the rest flow.

Styling Tip: Pair with cream booties or brown pumps, and layer with a faux leather trench coat for a retro  inspired outfit.

8. Transform You Maxi Dress (Fashion Nova Curve)

This dress combines soft, comfortable fabric with bold, figure-enhancing stripes. Available in both gray/black and lime/brown combos, the stripes defy the myth that plus size women shouldn’t wear horizontal patterns. This dress is proof that stripes are universally flattering.

Styling Tip: Add a cropped leather jacket and black flats for a casual vibe or pumps for a dressed  up look. Silver accessories work beautifully with the gray option.

9. Renae Ribbed Maxi Dress (Fashion Nova Curve)

This black rib knit maxi dress features a white collar and cuffs for a preppy, academic look. The bottom flares slightly, creating a feminine silhouette that’s both polished and playful. It’s giving major Wednesday Addams vibes—in the best way possible.

Styling Tip: Add loafers and a black tote for a sophisticated daytime look, or switch to heels and a bold red lip for nighttime glam.

10. Party Moves Sequin Maxi Dress (Fashion Nova Curve)

Glitz and glamour come together in this sequined maxi dress. Perfect for parties, birthdays or formal events, the sequins catch the light beautifully, ensuring all eyes are on you. You don’t need a special occasion to sparkle. Let this dress remind you that you’re worthy of shining every day.

Styling Tip: Keep accessories minimal and hair sleek to let the dress take center stage.

11. SOL Hi-Low Ruffle Dress (Ofuure)

This vibrant yellow dress is perfect for showing off your legs and cute shoes. The high-low design and dramatic ruffles create a look that’s equal parts flirty and glamorous. If yellow isn’t your color, the dress also comes in a rich red/burgundy option.

Styling Tip: Pair with gold accessories and strappy heels to match the sunny tones of this dress.

12. Anu Purple Chiffon Maxi Shirt Dress (Ofuure)

The bold orange, purple and green animalistic print on this dress is regal and eye-catching. The flowing chiffon fabric, cuffed sleeves, and included belt create a dreamy, ethereal silhouette. Although it runs long, a quick visit to a tailor or some hemming tape can fix that. Tailoring isn’t a failure—it’s a way to make clothes work for YOU. Invest in adjustments to make every piece in your wardrobe perfect.

Styling Tip: Keep the accessories minimal to let the bold print shine. Gold statement earrings and a sleek clutch are all you need.

What This Haul Taught Me About Fashion and Mental Health

After trying on all 12 dresses, I learned a lot more than just which styles suit me best. Here are my biggest takeaways:

1. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: Bold patterns, fitted silhouettes and unexpected cuts can be transformative. Don’t let fear stop you from experimenting.

2. Invest in Tailoring: Plus  size bodies are beautiful in their diversity, and tailoring helps ensure your clothes honor that.

3. Fashion Is Self  Care: Taking the time to dress in a way that makes you feel good is a powerful form of self  love.

4. Confidence is Key: Whether you’re wearing stripes, sequins or solids, the most important thing is how you feel in the clothes—not what others think.
